Position Summary:

The middle school learning specialist will work directly with fifth and sixth grade students in a resource classroom for six 45-minute periods a day to support, supplement, and extend classroom teaching in core content areas. The learning specialist will act as a resource and support for teachers in implementing accommodations and differentiation based on individual student needs. The learning specialist will develop learning plans for students based on assessment, observation, and psychoeducational testing and will work directly with middle school teachers to strategize, accommodate, and modify classroom instruction and assignments to ensure students are receiving the most effective instruction to support their learning strengths. The learning specialist will attend grade level team meetings, middle school divisional meetings, and support services meetings. As a teacher in the middle school, this individual will also serve as an advisor, lead an elective, and facilitate a club.

Qualifications and Attributes:

●      Advanced degree in Learning Disabilities preferred

●      Reading Specialist with credentials in programs such as Wilson and/or Orton Gillingham with an expertise in teaching Dyslexic students preferred

●      Ability to support Middle School Math curriculum

●      Training/experience in educational technologies, including online tools such as Bookshare, AIMSweb, Snap and Read, etc.

●      Attention to detail, record keeping, and follow up

●      Ability to interpret, summarize, discuss, and apply psychoeducational testing

●      Exceptional communication, collaboration, and writing skills

●      Self-directed and highly organized

●      Wide-ranging intellectual and educational interests and the ability to understand and support a middle school curriculum

●      Experience working individually with middle school students who have unique learning profiles

●      Ability to assess students’ strengths and challenges within the classroom in order to determine how students best learn

●      Experience strategizing techniques in executive functioning skills, study skills, time management, and organization

●      Ability to meet social-emotional and academic needs of middle school students

●      Experience teaching differentiation strategies to colleagues
