The Miquon School, a Progressive, non-sectarian independent school serving grades Nursery through 6, is seeking a part-time school social worker/school counselor to work with our students in the 24-25 school year. The salary will be commensurate with experience and the position reports to both the Head of School and Director of Teaching and Learning.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a school counselor or school social worker. Essential skills include the ability to build rapport and trust with students, colleagues, and families, as well as strong communication and organizational skills. This person will be a key member of the school’s Child Guidance Team. We are a community that is diverse along ethnic, economic, and religious lines and we seek applicants who represent and broaden that diversity.

This role is a 10-month position and will require 25 hours of work per week. While morning half-days are preferred, exact times are negotiable.


● Provide a comprehensive program of preventive and responsive services to address students’ social-emotional needs;

● Provide students with strategies that help them foster and advocate for a positive learning environment at school;

● Provide short-term individual and group counseling;

● Advocate for student services and maintain a comprehensive list of community resources;

● Collaborate with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Head of School, and the Child Guidance Team to develop effective plans of support for students, families, and faculty;

● Regularly communicate with families of students who receive support or intervention;

● Offer regular, whole class lessons on friendship and conflict resolution

● Provide crisis intervention and management services as needed

● Provide referral assistance for families to other agencies, professionals, and resources in the community

● Offer trainings and workshops to teachers and families;


● Master’s degree in social work or counseling required

● Previous experience working in a school setting desired

● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

● Approachable personality

● Strong sense of discretion and professionalism

● Ability to respond effectively to a diverse student body

● Working knowledge of various counseling models, practices, and resources

About Miquon

Founded in 1932 in a tradition of Progressive education that is strongly upheld today, Miquon is an independent, coeducational elementary school just outside of Philadelphia for children in Nursery (age 3) through the 6th grade. The school enrolls approximately 150 students in nine mixed-age groups, typically 18-22 children in size. Each classroom has two teachers who are responsible for providing instruction for their group together.
