Teacher Job Description

Founded in 1952, Plato Academy is a preK-8 school with 100 students. Plato Academy is an institution committed to democracy and progressive education with an integrated curriculum based on the project approach. Our curriculum includes specials classes such as yoga, dance, and foreign language study in Modern Greek and Spanish.  Our learning environment  is non-competitive, multi- age, and child-centered and we have a commitment to social justice and service learning. Plato Academy  is located in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Teacher responsibilities include:

Teaching all academic subjects in an integrated, project approach curriculum.
Providing a warm and supportive social and emotional environment for all children.
Working collaboratively other faculty, specials teachers, and staff in a small, close-knit, creatively energetic environment.
Sharing in supervision of school activities outside of the classroom
Assessing student progress, planning two student led parent-teacher conferences and a year-end reports.
Maintaining positive and effective relationships with parents and providing timely communication to in a weekly blog.
Participating as an engaged member of the faculty, attending regularly scheduled staff meetings.
Actively participating in and supporting the life of the school, its events and traditions.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of child development, progressive philosophy and constructivist theory and practice
Excellent communication skills
Ability to be self-motivated and a team player
Ability to provide for several levels of student ability and learning styles
Ability to create an integrated project approach curriculum.
Desire and ability to embrace continuing education in the field
Demonstrated knowledge of and grounding in equity, inclusion,diversity practice, and a commitment to anti-bias education
Experience and ability to teach in a virtual classroom environment if needed.

Qualifications and Compensation

A minimum of two years of elementary teaching experience, preferably in a progressive school.
Knowledge and understanding of progressive teaching methods.

Salary is dependent upon personal qualifications and degree.
