Founded in 1922, Orchard is an independent, non-sectarian, Progressive school for 500 students in preschool through the 8th grade. The Position
The Orchard School is seeking an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative Outdoor Education Teacher to join our faculty community beginning with the 2021-2022 academic year.

Orchard seeks educators who provide nurturing guidance through modeling and through essential teacher-student relationships. This is possible when teachers know their students, care about them, and see them each as individuals. It is in this essential teacher student relationship that profound learning and great aspirations take root and blossom. Orchard expects teachers to put children at the center of their own learning, facilitate engaging hands-on project-based learning, and have a deep understanding of child development and learning differences.  Orchard seeks to hire educators who desire to grow personally and professionally in the field of education.

Specific Duties

  • Teaches outdoor and environmental education to students from early childhood through grade 8
  • Develops creative, interdisciplinary lesson plans utilizing nature as teacher
  • Maintains outdoor education equipment and resources
  • Supports the Outdoor Education Coordinator and Grounds crew regarding maintenance of educational spaces on campus
  • Meets, greets, and provides prompt and friendly customer service to parents and visitors, as required.
  • Represents the school and Outdoor Education program in a positive professional manner to the broader community
  • Other related duties as assigned

Physical Demands

  • Talking, listening, and vision
  • Mobility to roam 44-acre site and hand dexterity to utilize various maintenance tools
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Climbing to set up and maintain the school’s challenge course

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Three or more years of experience in providing significant environmental educational programming, preferred
  • BA or BS in education, science, environmental science or related fields from a 4-year accredited college or university
  • Must be able to travel in and out of town from time to time for training and education.
  • Must possess a valid and current driver’s license to utilize Orchard School vehicles on a frequent basis.
  • Must protect confidential information and establish credibility
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to get along with diverse personalities
  • Judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, procedures, regulation or governmental law while recognizing and supporting the organization’s preferences and priorities
  • Working knowledge of environmental science and best practices
    Excellent intellectual flexibility and adaptability in response to changing environmental conditions and other events that necessitate schedule changes
