Library Media Specialist

The Position
The Orchard School seeks a well-qualified full-time library media specialist to join the robust faculty in our community for the 2021-22 school year. The library media specialist works with administration, parent volunteers, faculty, and students to create a dynamic, engaging and inspiring environment to nurture and instill a love of reading and literature among community members. We seek an innovative leader who is passionate about children’s literature and eager to share it in a variety of formats, working collaboratively with school constituents.

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for ensuring students and staff are effective and responsible users of ideas and information. By empowering students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information, this role will help nurture the curiosity and confidence of all students and ensure equitable access to information. The Library Media Specialist will also provide leadership and expertise necessary to ensure the school library and media services program is aligned with the mission, goals and objectives of the school and is an integral component of the learning and instructional program. This is an exciting time to step into this role at Orchard as we begin our conversations around what’s next for our library program and space.

Specific Duties

  • Creates and implements a vision for the Library Media Center.
  • Creates an environment in the Library Media Center that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, in collaboration with faculty.
  • Works as part of a team to integrate library resources with grade level curriculum content.
  • Incorporates the use of technology to make subject matter learning relevant and enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Serves as a resource in the curriculum development process to ensure that the curricula include the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy) necessary to achieve desired learning outcomes and to develop lifelong learners.
  • Collaborates with faculty and students to design engaging inquiry learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies (including information literacy) and foster critical thinking.
  • Manages day to day library media center activity including new book processing, book repair, weeding, shelving books, and reorganizing the collection.
  • Evaluates, selects, and orders new library materials, including audio-visual materials, digital text, hardware and software.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and instructs faculty and students in the use of the system.
    Provides basic technology support to faculty, staff and students.
  • Shares expertise by presenting at faculty meetings, in-service sessions, parent meetings, and school board meetings.
  • Partners with the local public library, as needed, on projects and initiatives.
  • Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs.
  • Develops and maintains a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community.
  • Prepares and administers the school library media center program budget to support specific program goals.

  • Qualifications and Attributes
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in related field
  • Demonstrated skills with instructional technology
  • Ability to carry out hands-on, experiential learning activities that advance the targeted learning outcomes
  • Experience with current research models
    Affinity and enthusiasm for working with children
  • Experience leading workshops, trainings, and projects for faculty
    Capacity to inspire children
    Excellent organizational and planning skills related to schedules, resource allocation, and long-range planning
    A commitment to Progressive education
  • Sound judgment and emotional maturity
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to supervise Library Media Center volunteers
