Overview of School 

Park Day School, founded in 1976, offers an outstanding co-educational K-8 program to 300 students. Our lush, four-acre campus is located in the vibrant Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, CA. Overview of the Position 

Reporting to the Lower School Director, the school seeks an experienced, vibrant outdoor educator who brings a strong background in science, gardening and place-based learning to their teaching practice, both on-site and remote. Class size is between 16-18 students. An outdoor classroom and yurt are available as the primary classrooms. The hiring process will include a screening interview and school tour. Finalists will submit samples of lesson plans, student assessments, and parent communication; lead a demonstration lesson for students; and participate in a second interview with the full hiring committee.

The Lower School Learning Garden Teacher is responsible for:

  • Designing curricula that provides a robust outdoor education via a stewardship lens that meets the developmental and academic needs of students in grades K-5.
  • Collaborating regularly with K-5 classroom teachers and other specialist program staff to provide a cohesive, interdisciplinary program with projects that complement learning across diverse settings.
  • Supervising students working and learning outdoors to maintain student garden areas and a mini farm with chickens in coordination with grounds staff.
  • Instructing students in the safe use of gardening and kitchen tools.
  • Collaborating closely with the Design ME Director, putting into action design and building projects as needed, as part of our Agency by Design research project collaboration with the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
  • Managing a set classroom budget for supplies, equipment and books.
  • Communicating with families via curricular posts on a predetermined schedule, bi-annual progress reports and parent/guardian conferences.
  • Adhering to a routine duty schedule for supervision of students at recess, lunch, and drop-off or pick up.
  • Coordinating parent volunteer participation in animal care duties and campus work parties, in collaboration with the facilities director and grounds staff.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have 3-5 years of exemplary lead classroom teaching experience and a valid California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential.
  • Be well-versed in progressive educational theory and practices and be culturally competent to build an inclusive community.
  • Have a proven track record of working successfully in a diverse student environment that upholds high values in social justice education and practices.
  • Possess a working understanding of developmental/constructivist teaching practices and social-emotional learning.
  • Have experience meeting a wide range of student learning styles and needs via multiple modalities and differentiating instruction in each subject area.
  • Have a nurturing, supportive, and clear tone with students, and experience with collaborative teaching.
