The Miquon School is seeking a Spanish teacher who is committed to Progressive education to develop a new Spanish language program, beginning in the 2020-21 school year. We are a community that is diverse along racial, ethnic, economic, and religious lines and Miquon seeks applicants who represent and broaden that diversity.
In line with the goals of our Strategic Plan, Miquon will add a Spanish language program in 2020. The ideal candidate for this position will design and develop a new program that reflects our Progressive educational philosophy and tenets. This person will collaborate with classroom teachers and other specialist teachers to develop an interdisciplinary approach to learning, integrating Spanish and global citizenship into various aspects of the school day. Candidates who will be able to creatively design an innovative program that brings passion and skills in Spanish language and culture to our students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to a Progressive teaching philosophy. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years experience teaching Spanish in a school setting. The ideal candidate would be a native or near-native Spanish speaker with a master’s degree.
We are looking for a Spanish teacher who will have:
-Experiences and ideas on how to design, create, and implement a new Spanish language curriculum for approximately 150 children ages 3 – 12 (Nursery through Sixth Grade);
-Substantial experience with elementary/middle grade ages;
-A deep understanding of and demonstrated commitment to Progressive education, pedagogy, and values, as well as a passion for learning;
-The ability to use his/her own individual talents and passions to inform the program;
-A continuing desire for professional development and learning;
-The ability to help nurture and develop children’s individual and healthy identities;
-A demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice;
-The capacity to understand, appreciate, and reflect the diversity of Miquon’s families;
-High energy, resourcefulness, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude;
-The ability to partner with classroom and specialists teacher colleagues;
-The ability to make use of formative assessments to flexibly adjust the ongoing instruction and experiences to meet the varied needs of individual students;
-Interest in offering mini-courses (electives); and
-Willingness to fulfill all other staff responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, including attending staff meetings, writing reports, and participating in community activities.
Founded in 1932 in a tradition of Progressive education that is strongly upheld today, Miquon is an independent, coeducational elementary school just outside Philadelphia for children in Nursery (age three) through the 6th grade. The school enrolls approximately 150 students in eight mixed-age groups, typically 18-24 children in size. Each classroom has two teachers who are responsible for providing instruction for their group together.
Miquon is dedicated to preserving childhood, using innovative student-centered teaching practices, and developing children’s knowledge of and appreciation for the environment. Time spent outside on our 10-acre campus including woods, fields, and a creek is an integral part of every child’s Miquon experience.
