Creative Movement and Music Specialist

Job Description:

The Little School serves approximately 160 children, ages 3-11, on a 12.5-acre wooded campus in Bellevue, Washington. We seek candidates who understand and appreciate the power of childhood and children as unique individuals learning in a social context. This is a full-time 10-month position, scheduled around the school day with before-school and after-school responsibilities. The Creative Movement and Music Specialist is responsible for developing and teaching a program for all students creating an engaging program that integrates music, drama, and creative movement. The Creative Movement and Music Specialist is the steward of the school’s culture of singing together and integrates their work through classroom connection. The Creative Movement and Music Specialist is involved in planning, supervision, professional development activities and all aspects of campus life. The position begins August 22, 2019.

Candidate Description:

·        Have a background in arts education and strong understanding of pedagogies that guide music, dance and drama

·        Understand that music and movement enhance a child’s connection to community, nature and art, and provide an opportunity for children to creatively express themselves

·        Laugh and play with students while offering a responsive and thoughtfully planned class

·        Seek collaboration with students and colleagues to bring vibrancy to student and community experiences


Responsibilities include:

Planning and teaching all Creative Movement and Music classes (preschool-5th grade) and writing bi-annual assessment reports
Leading weekly school sings along with faculty and students
In partnership with classroom faculty, designing and directing a dramatic and/or dance performance with each grade level
Supporting the social, emotional and academic needs of students using principles of developmentally responsive practice and progressive education
Engaging in ongoing communication with colleagues to develop collaborative strategies for student success and classroom connection
·        Maintaining, developing and teaching from a collection of equipment and instruments

Writing monthly newsletters and bi-annual assessment summaries for each class.
Supporting lunch and drop off supervision several times a week
Desired Skills and Experience:

Experience working with preschool and elementary school age children
Bachelor’s Degree and experience teaching music, creative movement and/or drama
Prior experience working collaboratively with colleagues in a school or similar setting
Understanding of child development, especially musical and physical development
Experience teaching ukulele preferred

Compensation will be based on candidate’s experience and background and is competitive with similar positions in Seattle area independent schools. This position is eligible for full medical benefits per The Little School’s employment policy.
