DESCRIPTION:Hanahau’oli School Progressive Youth Leadership Academy\nFor Students Entering Grades 9-12\nJune 15 through July 17\, 2020\nMonday through Friday\n1:00 to 4:00 PM\n$500 registration fee \nHanahau’oli School announces the return of the Progressive Youth Leadership Academy (PYLA) after a successful inaugural class in 2019. Youth entering grades 9-12 are invited to join our second cohort of leaders to find their “bliss” and reflect on their role in creating a better future society. The course includes a one hour seminar each day\, during which students will engage in inquiry\, reflection\, and the development of leadership skills under the mentorship of Mrs. Jennifer Stierli and Ms. Sasha Himeno-Price. Seminars are followed by two hours of hands-on practicum experience in Hanahau’oli Summer School’s After School Care Program\, where PYLA participants will apply their passions and interests to develop learning experiences for elementary-aged students. The course will culminate with a reflection and personal essay exploring how each student’s unique style of leadership is a vital expression of citizenship in our diverse democracy. Participants will earn 48 community service hours while learning about themselves\, identifying concrete ways they may contribute to a better future society\, and fine-tuning leadership skills with youth.

Led by locally renowned progressive educator\, Dr. Robert Peters\, participants will have the opportunity to engage in foundational seminars (topics listed below)\, learn from practicing teachers\, observe interdisciplinary lessons and units in action\, experience interdisciplinary strategies and resources\, collaborate with other educators\, design interdisciplinary units of their own\, and receive individual coaching as they implement curriculum and reflect on their practice. \nThis institute is ideal for individual educators\, grade level teams\, administrators\, curriculum coaches\, and school teams that are looking for tools to:\n• Improve School and Curriculum Design\n• Increase Student Voice\n• Engage in Teacher Collaboration\nEarly childhood and elementary educators may particularly benefit from the institute. \nAt the end of the Institute participants will walk away with a draft interdisciplinary unit that includes student outcomes\, instructional strategies and resources\, assessment tools\, and a network of lifelong colleagues to collaborate with in the future. Peters served as Head of School at Hanahau‘oli for 30 years. Hanahau‘oli is a multi-age school in the progressive education tradition which emphasizes creative expression through the arts. Dr. Peters is an instructor in the UH-HAIS Masters Degree program in Private School Leadership and has taught at the University of Massachusetts\, Smith College and Hampshire College. In 2000\, he was Visiting Scholar at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. Peters received his Doctorate in Educational Foundations in 1980 from the University of Massachusetts.

For students who benefit from learning supports\, there are specific considerations that administrators\, teachers and parents can begin to think about and integrate into lessons. \nThis series of three online workshops addresses various ways to support students with disabilities and ELLs in alignment with UDL principles. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework focuses on ways we can provide multiple means of representation\, action and expression\, and engagement for all learners.  \nWorkshop I: Digital Tools to Support Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners\nTuesday June 23\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:30 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-7:30 pm (PST) / 8:00 -9:30 pm (CST) / 9:00-10:30 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by: Dr. Kavita Rao & Dr. Cary Torres \nIn the distance and online and learning environment\, consider how to make the most of web-based tools\, apps\, and multimodal environments to provide multiple means of representation\, expression\, and engagement. In this workshop\, you will learn about how you can use UDL and digital tools along with the principles of language development to support ELLs and students with disabilities with literacy\, communication\, and organizational skills. \nWorkshop II: Strategies for Multi-lingual learners: Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) Online\nWednesday\, June 24\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:30 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-7:30 pm (PST) / 8:00 -9:30 pm (CST) / 9:00-10:30 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by: Dr. Cary Torres & Dr. Kavita Rao \nCulturally responsive teaching (CRT) is focused on making content relevant to learners and connected to their prior experiences. CRT also includes structuring instruction and activities to align with and support students’ varied patterns of thinking and ways of processing information. In order to be culturally responsive educators\, we need to consider both the content of what we are teaching and the ways we design and implement instruction\, assignments\, and assessments. The Center for Research on Education\, Diversity\, and Excellence CREDE provides seven standards for effective pedagogy. Learn how to integrate CRT in alignment with CREDE standards into online and distance education using various strategies. You can do this with no technology as well as some low-tech tools.  \nWorkshop III: Home-School Connections: Empowering Parents to Support Students with Disabilities in Distance/Online Learning\nThursday\, June 25\, 2020\n3:00 to 5:00 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-8:00 pm (PST) / 8:00 -10:00 pm (CST) / 9:00-11:00 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by Dr. Sean J. Smith \nCommunication between school and home is not only important for the parent and educator\, but also for the child. Working together\, teachers and parents can provide support systems to support the needs of children with disabilities in the distance/online learning environment. Parents of children with disabilities can play many roles – as learning coaches\, paraeducators and sometimes as home-based assistants to the teacher. Parents can also assist with progress monitoring. Learn how teachers and parents can collaborate and communicate effectively to ensure that  the academic and socioemotional needs of the child are being met in the distance and online learning environment. \nAbout the Presenters:\nThis series of workshops is presented by the team of educators behind School Virtually\, an online resource supporting both schools and families as they navigate the online and distance learning landscapes. Dr. Kavita Rao\, Dr. Sean J.
