SUMMARY:THE SUMMER 2020 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THINK TANK: DESIGNING MISSION-ALIGNED DISTANCE LEARNING
DESCRIPTION:THE SUMMER 2020 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THINK TANK: DESIGNING MISSION-ALIGNED DISTANCE LEARNING \nDates: July 1\, 2\, 8 & 15 \nTime: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM Hawaii Standard Time (with a 1 hour mid-morning break)\n11:00 AM to 4:00 PM PST / 1:00 to 6:00 PM CST / 2:00 to 7:00 PM EST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nCost: $450 per person / $375 per person for groups of 3+ \nTo Register: Visit www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar \n“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s\, we rob them of tomorrow.”\n	-John Dewey\, Democracy and Education\, 1944\, p. 167 \nWho would have thought that one of the most referenced John Dewey quotes could take on an entirely new meaning in the year 2020? With the words of this 100 year-old progressive educator in their hearts and minds–to stop the spread of COVID-19–educators across the world worked quickly this past spring to devise plans for crisis online instruction. It was truly a moment to “learn by doing\,” and now that summer is upon us\, it’s time to reflect on what we learned and gain the new knowledge we need to build distance learning plans that better reflect the missions of our beloved schools. \nThis summer program will support individual educators and school teams as they work to design a mission-aligned distance learning program for their school. It is framed around the question\, How do we ensure that our distance learning plan is progressive\, and aligns with the mission/vision of our school? Guided by expert instructors\, the program will function as a professional community of inquiry\, or think tank\, in which participants will have the opportunity to examine current research and best practices\, learn about model distance learning programs\, reflect and dialogue with peers\, and apply learning to create a solid distance learning program for their unique school context. In summary\, the program will include:\n– A structured reflection of: What worked well in your most recent crisis online instruction experience? What didn’t? Why?\n– Review of research\, theory\, and policy recommendations\n– Communicating to parents\n– Review of model-based best practices\n– Review of common terms and jargon\n– Exposure to model-based tools\n– Time for exploration of tools\n– Considerations for assessment\n– Case study experiences\n– Development of mission aligned\, progressive distance learning plans\n– Time for individuals and/or teams to plan\n– Facilitated discussions of plans including needs assessment techniques\n– Feedback on plans and alignment to mission and progressive values \nThis program is designed for both individual educators and school teams that are looking to create a distance learning program for their school community. School communities can range from pre-school to higher education\, or non-traditional forms or schooling such as museums or outdoor education programs. Teams can be made up of 3-5 members of a school community who want to engage in the program together. \nParticipants will meet with instructors on four different days\, four hours per day\, over the course of three weeks. This will allow time for individuals and school teams to meet on their own (or perhaps with other members of their school community) in between sessions to further develop the plans they are working on. It will also ensure that instructors can support participants as they uncover new questions and problems of practice as they emerge over the course of the summer. \nWorkshop Objectives:\nParticipants will be able to:\n– Identify research\, theory\, and policy recommendations (e.g.\, excerpts from Fed Tech Plan) related to distance learning.\n– Describe and apply model-based best practices\, model-based tools\, and common terms and jargon related to distance learning.\n– Examine case study experiences to learn more about progressive approaches to distance learning.\n– Develop a mission aligned\, progressive distance learning plans for their particular school context.\n– Consider and develop distance learning assessment (formative and summative) that support their school’s mission.\n– Engage in dialogue with instructors and peers to reflect and further develop their school’s distance learning plan.\n– Apply feedback to ensure that the distance learning plan they develop aligns to their school’s mission and progressive values. \nWorkshop Agenda: \nDay 1: \nSession A\nIntroductions\nWorkshop Overview\nParticipant Input (live or ahead of time)\nOnline Learning and Teaching Overview (theory\, policy\, and practice)\nJargon and terminology \nSession B\nBest practice models\nBest practice tools\nChoice grid (by grade level)\nSandbox and reflection time (by group)\nCheck-out \nDay 2: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nReview Day 1\nExamine case studies (by group)\nMission aligned planning with discussion \nSession B\nBest practice tools and models\, Part II\nAssessment\nSandbox and reflection time (by group)\nHomework assignments (draft rough plan with template)\nCheck-out \nDay 3: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nPractice and tools update (what did you try? what’s new?)\nDialogue in groups re: plans\nSandbox and reflection time (by group) \nSession B\nOne more case study (plan implementation)\nAssessment review\nWork on plans (in group)\nTurn in preliminary plans for review (including school/group mission/values)\nCheck-out \nDay 4: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nPractice and tools update (what did you try? what’s new?)\nPlanning reflections\nFinal sandbox time (by group) \nSession B\nReview plans with feedback (by group)\nWorkshop reflections\nCheck-out \nAbout the Presenters: \nDr. Michael Menchaca is a professor in the Department of Learning Design and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. SUMMARY:Supporting ELLs and Students with Disabilities in the Distance and Online Learning Environments
DESCRIPTION:Supporting ELLs and Students with Disabilities in the Distance and Online Learning Environments \nWorkshop Costs:\n$45 per event or register for all three to receive a $35 discount. (If paying by school purchase order\, please select the “Pay by Invoice” option upon checkout.) \nTo Register:\nVisit the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-events \nAs we plan for the possibility of distance\, online\, and hybrid approaches to teaching when schools reopen\, we can prepare to support all learners\, including students with disabilities and ELLs in these novel and varied formats. For students who benefit from learning supports\, there are specific considerations that administrators\, teachers and parents can begin to think about and integrate into lessons. \nThis series of three online workshops addresses various ways to support students with disabilities and ELLs in alignment with UDL principles. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework focuses on ways we can provide multiple means of representation\, action and expression\, and engagement for all learners. \nWorkshop I: Digital Tools to Support Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners\nTuesday June 23\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:30 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-7:30 pm (PST) / 8:00 -9:30 pm (CST) / 9:00-10:30 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by: Dr. Kavita Rao & Dr. Cary Torres \nIn the distance and online and learning environment\, consider how to make the most of web-based tools\, apps\, and multimodal environments to provide multiple means of representation\, expression\, and engagement. In this workshop\, you will learn about how you can use UDL and digital tools along with the principles of language development to support ELLs and students with disabilities with literacy\, communication\, and organizational skills. \nWorkshop II: Strategies for Multi-lingual learners: Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) Online\nWednesday\, June 24\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:30 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-7:30 pm (PST) / 8:00 -9:30 pm (CST) / 9:00-10:30 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by: Dr. Cary Torres & Dr. Kavita Rao \nCulturally responsive teaching (CRT) is focused on making content relevant to learners and connected to their prior experiences. CRT also includes structuring instruction and activities to align with and support students’ varied patterns of thinking and ways of processing information. In order to be culturally responsive educators\, we need to consider both the content of what we are teaching and the ways we design and implement instruction\, assignments\, and assessments. The Center for Research on Education\, Diversity\, and Excellence CREDE provides seven standards for effective pedagogy. Learn how to integrate CRT in alignment with CREDE standards into online and distance education using various strategies. You can do this with no technology as well as some low-tech tools. \nWorkshop III: Home-School Connections: Empowering Parents to Support Students with Disabilities in Distance/Online Learning\nThursday\, June 25\, 2020\n3:00 to 5:00 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-8:00 pm (PST) / 8:00 -10:00 pm (CST) / 9:00-11:00 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by Dr. Sean J. Smith \nCommunication between school and home is not only important for the parent and educator\, but also for the child. Working together\, teachers and parents can provide support systems to support the needs of children with disabilities in the distance/online learning environment. Parents of children with disabilities can play many roles – as learning coaches\, paraeducators and sometimes as home-based assistants to the teacher. Parents can also assist with progress monitoring. Learn how teachers and parents can collaborate and communicate effectively to ensure that the academic and socioemotional needs of the child are being met in the distance and online learning environment. \nAbout the Presenters:\nThis series of workshops is presented by the team of educators behind School Virtually\, an online resource supporting both schools and families as they navigate the online and distance learning landscapes. Dr. Kavita Rao\, Dr. Sean J. Smith\, and Dr. Cary Torres offer their extensive experience with the UDL framework\, educational and assistive technology\, instructional design\, and culturally responsive instruction to K-12 educators to ensure the needs of all learners are met during this novel time. \nTo learn more about School Virtually\, visit them online at: schoolvirtually.org \nTo register\, visit the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-events

SUMMARY:Creating Affirming and Just Schools: The Gender Spectrum and Best Practices for Serving LGBTQ Youth
DESCRIPTION:CREATING AFFIRMING AND JUST SCHOOLS: THE GENDER SPECTRUM AND BEST PRACTICES FOR SERVING LGBTQ YOUTH\nApril 16 & 17\, 2020\n8:30 am to 3:30 PM\nHanahau’oli School\n1922 Makiki Street\, Honolulu\, Hawaii 96822\nCourse Fee: $200 for the 2-day workshop \nTo feel safe and to feel seen. To feel valued and to feel capable of growth. These are simple concepts—basic pillars of student achievement and the results of good pedagogy. For many students who don’t conform to narrow gender norms and LGBTQ students\, these rights remain out of reach. — Teaching Tolerance \nStudents who don’t conform to narrow gender norms and LGBTQ students deserve to have their identities affirmed by educators across grades\, subject areas\, and schools. This workshop will engage participants in thinking about how we can improve curriculum\, pedagogy\, and policies to better support the experience of LGBTQ students in our schools. Participants will gain a conceptual understanding of heteronormativity and cisnormativity before applying those concepts to their own contexts. They will learn about the gender spectrum in an effort to move beyond the pink/blue binary to support students who don’t conform to narrow gender norms. They will be introduced to readings\, participate in discussions\, and review a number of powerful resources designed to support educators and school leaders on their journey to create just schools for LGBTQ youth. They will learn how the pervasiveness of heteronormativity and cisnormativity requires challenging them at all educational levels\, from elementary school to graduate education. By naming and challenging systems of harm\, they will explore how educators can work together to create teaching and learning spaces where LGBTQ students have their identities affirmed. \nThe 2-day workshop will be followed by a free public talk at the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Education: \nSAFETY IS NOT ENOUGH: CREATING AFFIRMING AND JUST SCHOOLS FOR LGBTQ YOUTH\nFriday\, April 17\, 2020\n5:30 to 7:30 pm\nUH Manoa College of Education CCC\, Wist Hall 134 \nContemporary political rhetoric from supporters of LGBTQ rights frequently call for “safe” schools for LGBTQ youth. While safety is important\, especially considering the statistics relating to bullying\, safety cannot be the ultimate goal. The present political moment\, in which the executive branch is using its weight to curtail the progress made for LGBTQ students\, demands the necessity of affirming and just schools for LGBTQ students\, families\, and communities. We can challenge the ingrained homophobia and transphobia that are part of the daily realities of schools through curricular and pedagogical activism. This free public talk outlines how such activism within and outside of classrooms could look. For more information about the free talk\, please visit the Hanahau’oli School website at: https://www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar/2020/gendertalk

SUMMARY:Philosophy for Children (P4C): Cultivating Inquiry\, Dialogue\, and Collaborative Civic Space
DESCRIPTION:Philosophy for Children (P4C): Cultivating Inquiry\, Dialogue\, and Collaborative Civic Space \nMonday\, November 18\, 2019 \n9:00 am to 4:00 pm \nAt the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center \nPhilosophy for Children (P4C) is a worldwide movement that aims to transform the schooling experience of children by engaging them in the activity of philosophy. Locally\, the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education is the home of philosophy for children Hawai‘i (p4c Hawai‘i). The p4c Hawai‘i approach aids students and teachers in converting traditional classrooms into intellectually safe communities of inquiry. Together\, they develop their ability to think for themselves in responsible ways by exploring “big questions” that arise from their interests\, experiences\, and learning contexts. When practiced with fidelity\, p4c Hawai‘i cultivates and nurtures a collaborative civic space in classrooms where individuals “experience of dialoguing with others as equals\, [and] participating in shared public inquiry [so] that they [are] able to eventually take an active role in the shaping of a democratic society’ (Sharp 1993: 343). In this workshop\, participants will learn about p4c Hawai‘i from Uehiro Academy faculty and become a part of an intellectually safe professional community of inquiry. They will engage in a number of p4c Hawai‘i’s hallmark activities and reflect on ways to apply the classroom strategies to their diverse teaching contexts. \nThis workshop is designed for K-12 educators\, higher education faculty\, and community educators who are interested in exploring how p4c Hawai‘i can be applied to contexts outside of the regular classroom setting. It is also designed for teachers who are interested in interdisciplinary and integrated approaches to education\, as well as teachers who want to apply the practice to traditional subject areas and coursework. \nWorkshop Objectives: \nParticipants will: \nBuild an intellectually safe professional community of inquiry. \nBe introduced to the history\, theoretical and practical frameworks behind the philosophy for children Hawai‘i (p4c Hawai‘i) movement\, including: \nThe four pillars \nKey activities and strategies \nRole of the teacher \nParticipant outcomes \nConnections between p4cHI and other national movements in education \nDefine and practice Intellectual Safety \nCreate and use a Community Ball \nExplore and apply the Good Thinker’s Tool Kit \nEngage in a Plain Vanilla philosophical inquiry \nReflect on experience and brainstorm future applications \nWorkshop Agenda: \n8:30 am – 9:00 am: Sign In\n9:00 am – 9:10 am: Welcome & Agenda\n9:10 am – 9:30 am: Overview of the p4c Hawai‘i Approach to Education\n9:30 am – 10:00 am: Intellectual Safety: Co-Constructing a Concept Map\n10:00 am – 11:00 am: Making a Community Ball\n11:00 am – 11:15 am: Break\n11:15 am – 12:30 pm: Introducing the Good Thinker’s Tool Kit\n12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Lunch\n1:30 pm – 3:00 pm: Plain Vanilla Inquiry\n3:00 pm – 3:30 pm: Applying the Practice to Your Particular Teaching Context: Break into Grade Level Teams\n3:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Large Group Reflection \nAbout the Presenters: \nDr. Thomas Jackson (Dr. J) is Director of the UH Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. In 1979 he received his doctorate in Comparative Philosophy from the University of Hawai’i. In 1984 he learned of the work of Dr. Matthew Lipman\, creator of the now world-recognized initiative Philosophy for Children (P4C). Inspired by a three-week training at Montclair State College which was conducted by Dr. Lipman & Ann Margaret Sharp\, and attended by some 30 international educators\, Dr. J returned to Hawai’i\, intent on bringing this incredibly rich\, promising initiative to Hawai’i. philosophy for children Hawai’i (p4cHawai’i) is our own “home grown” expression of Lipman’s original inspiration. \nDr. Benjamin Lukey received his doctorate in comparative philosophy from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. His interests in philosophy of disability\, comparative philosophy\, and philosophy for children (p4c) have developed from his broader goal of including more voices in philosophical discourse. Since 2007\, he has been part the p4c Hawai‘i initiative at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa\, piloting and developing a Philosopher in Residence project at Hawaii public high schools. Dr. Lukey continues to support p4c Hawaii teachers and students at Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School\, Kailua High School\, Waikiki Elementary\, Ka’elepulu Elementary\, and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is currently Associate Director for the UH Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. \nDr. Amber Strong Makaiau is an Associate Specialist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Education Institute for Teacher Education Secondary Program. She is also the Director of the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center and the Director of Curriculum and Research at the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. She is a dedicated practitioner of philosophy for children Hawai‘i who achieved National Board Certification while teaching secondary social studies in the Hawaii State Department of Education for over ten years. Her current projects include carrying out progressive\, multicultural\, social justice\, and democratic approaches to pre-service social studies teacher education\, using self-study research methodologies to promote international collaboration\, and developing the emergent field of deliberative pedagogy. \nDr. Chad Miller is the 2012 Hawaiʻi Teacher of the Year\, a National Board Certified teacher\, and is currently an Associate Specialist at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Institute for Teacher Education. Dr. Miller also serves as the Director of Teacher Development at the University’s Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education and in this “hybrid” role\, he teaches Language Arts methods courses\, as well as “Philosophy for Children (p4c)” courses in the College of Education to secondary teacher candidates. He also serves as a Philosopher in Residence\, where he collaborates with and supports teacher candidates and veteran K-12 teachers as they incorporate the activity of philosophy into their classroom practice through the use of the “Philosopher’s Pedagogy.” Dr. Miller received his BA in philosophy from John Carroll University and PhD in education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. \nDr. Thomas “Toby” Yos is a part-time Assistant Specialist at the Uehiro Academy. His primary focus is on designing and coordinating Academy outreach programs. He is also a philosopher-in-residence at Waikiki Elementary School. Situation in the school’s counseling department\, Dr. Yos incorporates philosophy for children Hawai’i (p4cHI) into a variety of mentoring initiatives. Dr. Yos received his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. His dissertation\, entitled “Educating for Good Judgment\,” was the first in the Philosophy Department to concentrate on p4cHI. Dr. Yos began his work with p4cHI in 1991 and has\, over the course of the past decades\, done p4cHI with thousands of students in a broad variety of schools and settings.

SUMMARY:Center for Progressive Education—Fall Institute 2018
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at Children’s Day School in San Francisco as we gather to strengthen and deepen our understanding and use of progressive education strategies and practices for working with diverse student populations. Our classrooms are settings with multifaceted diversity; our students exhibit a wide range of developmental levels\, learning differences\, ethnicities\, cultures\, gender identities\, and so on. Given such variations\, questions we hope to consider include:\n• How do teachers/schools make our pedagogy/teaching relevant to our students? Their families? Their local communities?\n• What strategies can/do we use to understand\, respect\, and connect with our students across similarities and differences?\n• Which classroom practices are best for removing barriers and building on the strengths of individual learners?\nThis one-day institute will consist of a keynote speech and three 90-minute sessions with workshops focused on reaching and teaching all learners in our classrooms. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nFor more information and registration details\, visit https://cpefallinstitute2018.eventbrite.com
