Work time is incorporated throughout the Institute including access to instructors\, resources\, and small group debriefing. \nSeminar Topics Include: \nProgressive Education – Progressive philosophy and pedagogy\, with connections to school design\, student voice\, and teacher collaboration \nInterdisciplinary Curriculum Design – Thematic interdisciplinary instruction capitalizes upon student interests and promotes critical thinking and collaboration\, integrating skill-development\, the arts\, and literature \nCollaboration & Communication – Create an environment that supports working together as problem-solvers\, while developing the skills to become effective communicators \nCritical & Creative Thinking – Foster inquiry by building upon natural curiosity and asking questions that promote thinking \nAssessment & Standards – Know what is important for students to learn and how to assess it—to inform instruction and evaluate student progress \nTechnology as a Tool – Integrate technology effectively as both an instructional and evaluation tool \nAbout the Instructor:\nDr. Robert G. SUMMARY:Learning Design for a New Era
DESCRIPTION:Join us on ZOOM on Wednesday\, March 9\, 2022\nfrom 4:30-6:00 P.M. EST\nregister @ https://bit.ly/lrei-inspired \nLearning Design for a New Era\nwith TIM FISH\, Chief Innovation Officer\, NAIS \nWe hope that you will join us for this INSPIRED event that is part of the Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin’s (LREI) Centennial celebration. In engaging with a wider community of educators\, we take as our starting point the promise and possibility of progressive pedagogy that 100 years ago was a radical proposition\, and affirm its essential role in defining what and how our schools must be as we look forward to the adjacent future and to the next 100 years. \nIn this session\, Tim Fish\, Chief Innovation Officer\, National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) will share insights from hundreds of school visits and offer an emerging framework for transformational learning. Session participants will have the opportunity to explore the essential ingredients of the framework in breakout groups and offer feedback and new avenues for inquiry. In the spirit of LREI’s progressive purpose\, Fish is not presenting answers\, rather\, his ideas will serve as an invitation to a spirited conversation among participants. \nhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1_2I2fzVT2mqjsXa_7UTvSs_V5RTqtBrhVbzbHcxDEaI/edit?usp=sharing

SUMMARY:Got 20% Time? Inspiring Students to Pursue Their Passions
DESCRIPTION:Got 20% Time? Inspiring Students to Pursue Their Passions \nDate: Tuesday\, November 9\, 2021 \nTime: 3:30 – 5:30 PM Hawaii / 5:30-7:30 PM Pacific / 7:30-9:30 PM Central / 8:30-10:30 PM Eastern \nVenue: Online Via Zoom \nCost: $45 per participant (Scholarships available! Please inquire at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc.) \nTraditional and over-regimented school schedules rarely give students enough free time each week to pursue a passion project\, design their own inquiry and learning outcomes\, and go above-and-beyond standards to reach a greater depth of knowledge than most curriculum tends to allow. So how might school leaders and educators take small steps to re-think the “master schedule\,” and create space in the school day that “honors and nurtures students’ natural curiosity and innate desire to learn\, fostering internal motivation and the discovery of passion and purpose” (Progressive Education Network\, 2021)? In this workshop\, Melissa Speetjens\, Principal of Waimea Canyon Middle School and Serena Cox\, former Deeper Learning Instructional Coach at Waimea Canyon Middle School\, will share about their work with a 20% Time framework. \nIn this workshop\, K-12 teachers and teacher leaders will be invited to think creatively about how they might use a 20% Time framework within their current school schedule to better support students’ exploration of their own interests\, spark their creativity\, develop a sense of purpose\, share their passion\, and foster student-centered learning and inquiry. They will: \nExplore the Innovator’s Mindset associated with 20% Time \nDesign a plan for implementing 20% Time using a suggested structure and resources \nReceive feedback that is kind\, specific\, and helpful \nExhibit a presentation of learning \nWorkshop participants will be provided with specific examples–grounded in the real life experiences of the presenters–related to engaging community and stakeholder partnerships\, student project management\, and student/teacher reflective practices as integral pieces of student learning and exhibition success. \nTo learn more and register for this and other Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online workshops and events\, please visit: www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar

SUMMARY:The Human Restoration Project: Reimagining Classrooms with Systems-Based Progressive Education Thinking
DESCRIPTION:The Human Restoration Project: Reimagining Classrooms with Systems-Based Progressive Education Thinking \nDate: Saturday\, September 4\, 2021 AND Saturday\, September 11\, 2021 \nTime: 8-10AM Hawaii / 11AM-1PM Pacific / 1-3PM Central / 2-4PM Eastern \nVenue: Online Via Zoom \nCost: $50 per person (Scholarships available! Please inquire at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc.) \nCreating a liberatory\, human-centered classroom goes beyond a simple lesson plan or one-and-done workshop session. Instead we must radically reimagine what a classroom is\, questioning our assumptions about schooling\, students\, and educators. In this workshop\, participants will learn about progressive systems in education\, including research\, inquiry questions\, and interactive activities to push for educative systemic change. \nThis workshop is primarily aimed at educators and administrators (from all school types) and will provide an opportunity for learning concepts such as gradeless learning\, restorative justice\, and critical pedagogy\, with a focus on implementation in addition to laying groundwork for the theories. \nTo learn more and register for this and other Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online workshops and events\, please visit: www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar

SUMMARY:The Summer 2021 Professional Development Think Tank: Using the Social Justice Standards for Anti-Bias Curricular Redesign
DESCRIPTION:The Summer 2021 Professional Development Think Tank: Using the Social Justice Standards for Anti-Bias Curricular Redesign \nDates: July 12\, 14\,19 & 21\, 2021 \nTime: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM Hawaii Standard Time (with a 1 hour mid-morning break)\n11:00 AM to 4:00 PM Pacific / 1:00 to 6:00 PM Central / 2:00 to 7:00 PM Eastern \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nCost: $450 per person / $375 per person for groups of 2+ \nScholarships are available. Please inquire at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc. \nThis summer program will support individual educators and school teams as they work to promote social justice education in their schools. Guided by an expert instructor\, the program will function as a professional community of inquiry\, or Think Tank\, in which participants will have the opportunity to examine current research and best practices\, engage in an anti-bias curricular inquiry and revision process\, reflect and dialogue with peers\, and apply learning to integrate the Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance) Social Justice Standards into beloved curriculum and units of study. \nThink Tank participants should be actively planning and delivering instruction in their role and have the professional freedom to make changes to the curriculum they teach. They will begin the program with an inquiry protocol whereby we’ll collaborate to identify gaps and areas for improvement in our curricula. Then\, they will choose a unit to redesign and will be given time\, receive support and learn techniques to revise that unit\, intentionally embedding the goals of anti-bias education into the curriculum. Elements of instruction involved in this “redesign” process will include thematic framing\, essential questions\, text selection\, discussion strategies and authentic assessment. \nIn summary\, the program will take participants through the process of identifying an existing unit of study from their curriculum\, and redesigning that unit in four key areas: \n1) Purpose for Learning \n2) Diversity\, Representation and Inclusion \n3) Critical Conversations \n4) Meaning Making \nThis program is designed for both individual educators and school teams that are looking to create social justice curriculum for their school community. School communities can range from pre-school to higher education\, or non-traditional forms or schooling such as museums or outdoor education programs. Teams can be made up of 2-5 members of a school community who want to engage in the program together. \nParticipants will meet with the instructor on four different days\, four hours per day\, over the course of two weeks. This will allow time for individuals and school teams to meet on their own (or perhaps with other members of their school community) in between sessions to further develop the plans they are working on. It will also ensure that instructors can support participants as they uncover new questions and problems of practice as they emerge over the course of the summer.

SUMMARY:p4c Hawai‘i Summer Symposium 2021
DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can use Philosophy For Children at the p4c Hawai‘i Summer Symposium 2021! \nDates/Times:\nTue\, July 6 – 9:30am to 2:00pm HST\nWed\, July 7 – 10:00am to 4:00pm HST\nThu\, July 8 -10:00am to 2:00pm HST\nTue\, July 13 – 10:00am to 2:00pm HST\nWed\, July 14 – 10:00am to 11:00am HST\nThu\, July 15 – 10:00am to 2:00pm HST\nTue\, July 20 – 10:00am to 2:00pm HST\nWed\, July 21 – 10:00am to 11:00am HST\nThu\, July 22 – 10:00am to 3:00pm HST\nSome dates and times are optional. Please click here to view the detailed schedule. \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nCost: $500 (Individual)\, $400 (Group) \nThe University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education invites you to register for the p4cHI Virtual Summer Symposium. This year’s Symposium will introduce participants to both the theory and practice of p4cHI through hands-on engagement in an “intellectually safe” philosophical community of inquiry. Participants will gain a better understanding of the Four Pillars of p4c Hawai‘i (Community\, Inquiry\, Philosophy\, and Reflection) and the p4c Hawai‘i Philosophers’ Pedagogy. This three-week educative experience will help participants apply the p4c Hawai‘i approach to teaching and learning to their own contexts and goals. \nAlso included in the Symposium is the following 2-hour online talk\, which is open to the public: \nExploring the Relevance of Progressive Philosophy in Present Times: Possible Impacts on Individuals\, Schools\, and Society Today\nDate: Wednesday\, July 7\, 2021\nTime: 2:00-4:00 PM Hawaii /5:00-7:00 PM Pacific / 7:00-9:00 PM Central / 8:00-10:00 PM Eastern\nVenue: Online Via Zoom\nCost: $15 per person \nAt this event we bring together a panel of diverse thought leaders who will explore the relevance of progressive philosophy in present times. Located at the intersecting projects of philosophy\, education\, and democracy–progressive philosophy is an emergent term born out of the late 19th Century progressive education movement and the ongoing progressive impulse in education\, which aims to “develop self-actualizing individuals who can take charge of their own lives and participate fully in the creation of a greater public good” (Bruce & Eryman\, 2015\, p. 1). As we collectively make our way through the COVID-19 pandemic recovery period\, we want to wonder together\, how might a progressive philosophy support individuals\, schools\, and society at-large in creating lasting positive change. \nTo further this inquiry\, Theresa Squires Collins of the Progressive Education Network and The Francis W. Parker School in Chicago\, Dr. Masato Ishida of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Department of Philosophy\, Chris McNutt of the Human Restoration Project\, and Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer of the University of Hawaii – West Oahu will serve as panelists. Together with Facilitators Dr. Amber Strong Makaiau and Dr. Chad Miller of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education\, they will share and engage in dialogue around the following questions:\n– What is your “work\,” and what do you love about it? What are your connections with philosophy\, education\, and schooling?\n– What do you think about the term\, progressive philosophy? What does it mean to you?\n– What do you see as the biggest challenges in today’s world? What might be the value of progressive philosophy in addressing these challenges?\n– What might be the possible impact of progressive philosophy on individuals\, schools\, and society in present times?\n– Are there any connections between progressive philosophy and any of your current projects?\n– What new questions have emerged as a result of our time together? \nA collaboration between the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center\, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education\, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education Progressive Philosophy Pedagogy MEd Interdisciplinary Education\, Curriculum Studies Program — this event aims to build our collective capacity for creating a better future society for today’s children. \nTo learn more and register for these and other Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online workshops and events\, please visit: www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar

SUMMARY:THE SUMMER 2020 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THINK TANK: DESIGNING MISSION-ALIGNED DISTANCE LEARNING
DESCRIPTION:THE SUMMER 2020 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THINK TANK: DESIGNING MISSION-ALIGNED DISTANCE LEARNING \nDates: July 1\, 2\, 8 & 15 \nTime: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM Hawaii Standard Time (with a 1 hour mid-morning break)\n11:00 AM to 4:00 PM PST / 1:00 to 6:00 PM CST / 2:00 to 7:00 PM EST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nCost: $450 per person / $375 per person for groups of 3+ \nTo Register: Visit www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar \n“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s\, we rob them of tomorrow.”\n	-John Dewey\, Democracy and Education\, 1944\, p. 167 \nWho would have thought that one of the most referenced John Dewey quotes could take on an entirely new meaning in the year 2020? With the words of this 100 year-old progressive educator in their hearts and minds–to stop the spread of COVID-19–educators across the world worked quickly this past spring to devise plans for crisis online instruction. It was truly a moment to “learn by doing\,” and now that summer is upon us\, it’s time to reflect on what we learned and gain the new knowledge we need to build distance learning plans that better reflect the missions of our beloved schools. \nThis summer program will support individual educators and school teams as they work to design a mission-aligned distance learning program for their school. It is framed around the question\, How do we ensure that our distance learning plan is progressive\, and aligns with the mission/vision of our school? Guided by expert instructors\, the program will function as a professional community of inquiry\, or think tank\, in which participants will have the opportunity to examine current research and best practices\, learn about model distance learning programs\, reflect and dialogue with peers\, and apply learning to create a solid distance learning program for their unique school context. In summary\, the program will include:\n– A structured reflection of: What worked well in your most recent crisis online instruction experience? What didn’t? Why?\n– Review of research\, theory\, and policy recommendations\n– Communicating to parents\n– Review of model-based best practices\n– Review of common terms and jargon\n– Exposure to model-based tools\n– Time for exploration of tools\n– Considerations for assessment\n– Case study experiences\n– Development of mission aligned\, progressive distance learning plans\n– Time for individuals and/or teams to plan\n– Facilitated discussions of plans including needs assessment techniques\n– Feedback on plans and alignment to mission and progressive values \nThis program is designed for both individual educators and school teams that are looking to create a distance learning program for their school community. School communities can range from pre-school to higher education\, or non-traditional forms or schooling such as museums or outdoor education programs. Teams can be made up of 3-5 members of a school community who want to engage in the program together. \nParticipants will meet with instructors on four different days\, four hours per day\, over the course of three weeks. This will allow time for individuals and school teams to meet on their own (or perhaps with other members of their school community) in between sessions to further develop the plans they are working on. It will also ensure that instructors can support participants as they uncover new questions and problems of practice as they emerge over the course of the summer. \nWorkshop Objectives:\nParticipants will be able to:\n– Identify research\, theory\, and policy recommendations (e.g.\, excerpts from Fed Tech Plan) related to distance learning.\n– Describe and apply model-based best practices\, model-based tools\, and common terms and jargon related to distance learning.\n– Examine case study experiences to learn more about progressive approaches to distance learning.\n– Develop a mission aligned\, progressive distance learning plans for their particular school context.\n– Consider and develop distance learning assessment (formative and summative) that support their school’s mission.\n– Engage in dialogue with instructors and peers to reflect and further develop their school’s distance learning plan.\n– Apply feedback to ensure that the distance learning plan they develop aligns to their school’s mission and progressive values. \nWorkshop Agenda: \nDay 1: \nSession A\nIntroductions\nWorkshop Overview\nParticipant Input (live or ahead of time)\nOnline Learning and Teaching Overview (theory\, policy\, and practice)\nJargon and terminology \nSession B\nBest practice models\nBest practice tools\nChoice grid (by grade level)\nSandbox and reflection time (by group)\nCheck-out \nDay 2: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nReview Day 1\nExamine case studies (by group)\nMission aligned planning with discussion \nSession B\nBest practice tools and models\, Part II\nAssessment\nSandbox and reflection time (by group)\nHomework assignments (draft rough plan with template)\nCheck-out \nDay 3: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nPractice and tools update (what did you try? what’s new?)\nDialogue in groups re: plans\nSandbox and reflection time (by group) \nSession B\nOne more case study (plan implementation)\nAssessment review\nWork on plans (in group)\nTurn in preliminary plans for review (including school/group mission/values)\nCheck-out \nDay 4: \nSession A\nCheck-in\nPractice and tools update (what did you try? what’s new?)\nPlanning reflections\nFinal sandbox time (by group) \nSession B\nReview plans with feedback (by group)\nWorkshop reflections\nCheck-out \nAbout the Presenters: \nDr. Michael Menchaca is a professor in the Department of Learning Design and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In this workshop\, you will learn about how you can use UDL and digital tools along with the principles of language development to support ELLs and students with disabilities with literacy\, communication\, and organizational skills. \nWorkshop II: Strategies for Multi-lingual learners: Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) Online\nWednesday\, June 24\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:30 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-7:30 pm (PST) / 8:00 -9:30 pm (CST) / 9:00-10:30 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by: Dr. Cary Torres & Dr. Kavita Rao \nCulturally responsive teaching (CRT) is focused on making content relevant to learners and connected to their prior experiences. CRT also includes structuring instruction and activities to align with and support students’ varied patterns of thinking and ways of processing information. In order to be culturally responsive educators\, we need to consider both the content of what we are teaching and the ways we design and implement instruction\, assignments\, and assessments. The Center for Research on Education\, Diversity\, and Excellence CREDE provides seven standards for effective pedagogy. Learn how to integrate CRT in alignment with CREDE standards into online and distance education using various strategies. You can do this with no technology as well as some low-tech tools. \nWorkshop III: Home-School Connections: Empowering Parents to Support Students with Disabilities in Distance/Online Learning\nThursday\, June 25\, 2020\n3:00 to 5:00 PM (HST-Hawaii Standard Time)\n6:00-8:00 pm (PST) / 8:00 -10:00 pm (CST) / 9:00-11:00 pm (EST)\nFacilitated by Dr. Sean J. Smith \nCommunication between school and home is not only important for the parent and educator\, but also for the child. Working together\, teachers and parents can provide support systems to support the needs of children with disabilities in the distance/online learning environment. Parents of children with disabilities can play many roles – as learning coaches\, paraeducators and sometimes as home-based assistants to the teacher. Parents can also assist with progress monitoring. Learn how teachers and parents can collaborate and communicate effectively to ensure that the academic and socioemotional needs of the child are being met in the distance and online learning environment. \nAbout the Presenters:\nThis series of workshops is presented by the team of educators behind School Virtually\, an online resource supporting both schools and families as they navigate the online and distance learning landscapes. Dr. Kavita Rao\, Dr. Sean J. Smith\, and Dr. Cary Torres offer their extensive experience with the UDL framework\, educational and assistive technology\, instructional design\, and culturally responsive instruction to K-12 educators to ensure the needs of all learners are met during this novel time. \nTo learn more about School Virtually\, visit them online at: schoolvirtually.org \nTo register\, visit the Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center online at www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-events

SUMMARY:Creating Affirming and Just Schools: The Gender Spectrum and Best Practices for Serving LGBTQ Youth
DESCRIPTION:CREATING AFFIRMING AND JUST SCHOOLS: THE GENDER SPECTRUM AND BEST PRACTICES FOR SERVING LGBTQ YOUTH\nApril 16 & 17\, 2020\n8:30 am to 3:30 PM\nHanahau’oli School\n1922 Makiki Street\, Honolulu\, Hawaii 96822\nCourse Fee: $200 for the 2-day workshop \nTo feel safe and to feel seen. To feel valued and to feel capable of growth. These are simple concepts—basic pillars of student achievement and the results of good pedagogy. For many students who don’t conform to narrow gender norms and LGBTQ students\, these rights remain out of reach. — Teaching Tolerance \nStudents who don’t conform to narrow gender norms and LGBTQ students deserve to have their identities affirmed by educators across grades\, subject areas\, and schools. This workshop will engage participants in thinking about how we can improve curriculum\, pedagogy\, and policies to better support the experience of LGBTQ students in our schools. Participants will gain a conceptual understanding of heteronormativity and cisnormativity before applying those concepts to their own contexts. They will learn about the gender spectrum in an effort to move beyond the pink/blue binary to support students who don’t conform to narrow gender norms. They will be introduced to readings\, participate in discussions\, and review a number of powerful resources designed to support educators and school leaders on their journey to create just schools for LGBTQ youth. They will learn how the pervasiveness of heteronormativity and cisnormativity requires challenging them at all educational levels\, from elementary school to graduate education. By naming and challenging systems of harm\, they will explore how educators can work together to create teaching and learning spaces where LGBTQ students have their identities affirmed. \nThe 2-day workshop will be followed by a free public talk at the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Education: \nSAFETY IS NOT ENOUGH: CREATING AFFIRMING AND JUST SCHOOLS FOR LGBTQ YOUTH\nFriday\, April 17\, 2020\n5:30 to 7:30 pm\nUH Manoa College of Education CCC\, Wist Hall 134 \nContemporary political rhetoric from supporters of LGBTQ rights frequently call for “safe” schools for LGBTQ youth. While safety is important\, especially considering the statistics relating to bullying\, safety cannot be the ultimate goal. The present political moment\, in which the executive branch is using its weight to curtail the progress made for LGBTQ students\, demands the necessity of affirming and just schools for LGBTQ students\, families\, and communities. We can challenge the ingrained homophobia and transphobia that are part of the daily realities of schools through curricular and pedagogical activism. This free public talk outlines how such activism within and outside of classrooms could look. For more information about the free talk\, please visit the Hanahau’oli School website at: https://www.hanahauoli.org/pdc-calendar/2020/gendertalk
